In Turkish, the "Cotton Citadel"; immediately recognizable from the innumerable photographs of the brilliantly white calcareous cliffs with their curative mineral waters. Less publicized is the ancient town, Hierapolis, with its interesting Roman theater and the spectacular necropolis with more than one-thousand stone sarcophagi and built tombs from the Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine eras collapsed in an apocalyptic jumble (L).
